Communication Protocols:
For detailed information and scheduling, I prefer e-mail.
Texting is fun, but exhausting. There are days when I will have to wait hours before texting you back.
Every Monday, I go incommmunicado. Necessary, but I realize it’s annoying for others.
I’ll evaluate the information you bring before I decide whether I trust you, like you, endorse you, or want you.
Interrupting
What Counts as a Rude Interruption Depends on Your Gender, Study Confirms
Male listeners were more likely to view women who interrupted another speaker in the audio clips as ruder, less friendly and less intelligent than men who interrupted – using the same pre-written and acted scripts.
Deborah Tannen:
As a linguist who studies the mechanics of conversation, I’ve observed and documented that beginning to talk while another is talking can be a way of showing enthusiastic engagement with what the speaker is saying. Far from silencing them, it can be encouragement to keep going. That’s a practice that I call “cooperative overlapping.”
Anil Dash, CEO, most recently of Glitch:
It feels so validating to hear this has a name! I really struggle with talking over people (I understand many experience this very negatively), but it’s an incredibly difficult pattern to change because it’s literally how I grew up communicating enthusiasm and support.
Deborah Tannen again:
If ‘Don’t interrupt me’ is sometimes a reasonable request, so is ‘Don’t just sit there! Please overlap — cooperatively!’
